If the US were to decide on a fixed and fair price for OIL within its borders, then OPEC would be prevented from manipulating markets within the US, which ultimately stands in the way of bringing the cost of Green Technology down to the levels they would be at naturally without the artificial interference of OPEC. So in such a "variable Tariff/Fixed Price" model, if the price of oil were to rise above the fixed price ...more »
New Ways of Doing Business, New Tools...
It's 100% clear that the biggest thing standing in the way of living in a world of ALL green, clean energy (or progress in general) are the companies and people who stand to lose market share as a result of the emergence of new companies and new technologies. These people and large companies will fight tooth and nail to maintain their profits. I don't particularly care for these companies or people, BUT I'd rather live ...more »
Already-proven engineering and ethical principals need to a greater degree be incorporated into the decision-making process. In particular, given its promise of finding optimal solutions, it is key that Nash Equilibrium models are used to form the daily decisions that determine how limited resources are spent, thus optimizing energy sufficiency and sustainability. Great care must be made in structuring and reviewing ...more »

From having driven for a living I know that I could avoid slow downs and lights by knowing alternate turns I could make to avoid waiting at lights. A systematic approach to doing this might yield some efficiency gains that would be worth doing for GPS and route mapping.
I had a friend that worked in an nuclear power plant tell me that this type of energy plant runs full bore day and night and when the demand is low, they ground out the energy back into the earth! I have always felt that the US could lead the way to the future by moving toward a hydrogen transportation economy. Once we are established using hydrogen and electric vehicles, the rest of the world would be forced ...more »
I am of the opinion that there is a possibility of at least partially solving two of the most pressing issues facing our society with one simple innovation. These issues are health/obesity and a need to find an efficient and renewable energy source. The idea for solving these (in part) isn't really complicated. We would just need to convert basic exercise equipment into devices that convert mechanical (when used ...more »
For some of its dealings with the public the DoE seems to favor the Windows operating system. One consequence is that non-Windows users may have to jump through all kinds of hoops before they can deal with the DoE. The example I refer to is submitting proposals through the website 'grants.gov'. Last year this was very windows-specific, this year it seemed to be a little easier for non-Windows users, but it was still ...more »
Wired Magazine had a great article on Thorium's use in nuclear power. It seems we experimented with it and dropped it in favor of Uranium because we wanted the by products of Uranium fission for bomb making. But Thorium is much safer, has less waste and the waste isn't as dangerous as Uranium waste. The government should fund Kirk Sorensen and pursue Thorium power plants. http://www.wired.com/magazine/2009/12/ff_new_nukes/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wired%2Findex+%28Wired%3A+Index+3+%28Top+Stories+2%29%29 ...more »
I am in favor of the development of nuclear energy if we can find a permanent way to safely dispose of the waste. I do not believe that storage is any more than a temporary and, possibly, disastrous expedient. As we all know, even the best sealed and protected land sites are subject to break-in and theft, as has been historically demonstrated by the tombs and pyramids of Egypt. Pleas read and consider my proposal. ...more »
